Bento box – “Ventó”
Teak, ebony, ivory and gilt copper
Indo-Portuguese, 17th century
Dim.: 27.5 x 25.5 x 34.0 cm
Prov.: P.C., England

Goa made mid-17th century Indo-Portuguese bento box. The compactly constructed parallelepiped teakwood case, of lateral hinged door encasing five symmetrically organized drawers, is decorated in dense ebony and ivory inlaid compositions and rests on four copper bun feet. The decorative motifs eurhythmy and symmetry, filling the whole box surface, take maximum advantage of the contrasting effects of the mellow teak and dark ebony inlays punctuated by bright white ivory pegs.
The box outer panels repeat an identical carpet-like decorative pattern, with a central medallion that defines the whole composition, which is encased by a peripheral wide ebony band. On both the inner and outer door surfaces the evident defining element is a centrally placed lion, while on the remaining external elevations as well as on the top panel, the centre is marked by elegant twelve petal rosettes. These are encased by double ebony frame of pierced lace-like gilt copper corner pieces.
Emerging from these central elements, identical ornamental grammar of regularly placed phytomorphic motifs – stylised foliage scrolls – whose patterns are organised in mirrored and opposing sections on either side of a vertical axis.
The door is fixed by three identical hinges of finely pierced and gilt copper, featuring an exuberant and profusely decorated lock escutcheon defined by four, square placed, flower-headed pins. The handle, fitted to the top for ease of transport, was cast in the same gilt metal.
On the door inner surface the carpet-like decoration is centred by a lion head encircled by double border, of which the outer band is defined by radial ebony triangles fixed by ivory pegs. These are encased by square a frame having in each corner fleurs-de-lis that simulate the sun. The surrounding field is characterised by a chequered dark and light pattern of angled ebony squares inlaid into the lighter coloured teakwood – one of Goa’s typical decorative variants – which in turn frames peripherally the wrought iron lock plate.
The five drawers are arranged over three tiers, in symmetrical pairs on the bottom and top tiers and with a central shallower drawer of double width. The drawer fronts are decorated by ebony inlaid floral motifs, identically fixed by ivory pegs, organised in symmetry and centred by gilt copper floral knob.
The floral and foliage character of the decorative motifs, with stylised stems and leaves forming scrolls of elegant erudition, results from the fusion of Hindu and Islamic decorative models. This artistic formula, in addition to the contrasting chequered field and lion depictions acting as protective symbols, merges into a characteristically Goan artistic model that subsisted throughout the 17th century.
