Commonly known as a “Hamburg Bottle”, this rare vessel is decorated in cobalt-blue pigment on a tin-white ground and dated 1642. Resting on a low conical foot, its ovoid shaped body extends to a tall neck, joined to the prominent body by a semi-circular handle.
The central decorative element, occupying a large body section, is focused on an armorial within a looped and scrolled circular frame. The composition is completed by dense foliage and floral motifs, of stylised camellias and Chinese-Pine branches that extend up to the lip, in a clear allusion to an Oriental model that follows Chinese Ming porcelain prototypes. The foot is wrapped in a radial decorative motif of palmettes alternating with vertical lines.
The exuberant heraldic dated 1642 refers to the city of Danzig (present day Gdansk) in Poland. This detail identifies this pitcher as a commission from a Hanseatic League city via Hamburg, the main trading gateway between northern Europe and Portugal.
This type of decorative detail, rare on Chinese porcelain, alludes to the fashionable Italian majolica pieces fashionable throughout Europe. The intricate lines and palmettes recall the garlands, in the style of Della Robbia. The ribbons that fall from the crown as well as the floral motifs of camellias and Chinese-Pine branches evoke on the contrary the links to Chinese porcelain.
Of the various wares commissioned by Hanseatic League cities, pitchers were amongst the most desirable. On arrival in Germany they were fitted with locally cast pewter lids. Their shape is clearly European, following typologies common to contemporary German pitchers. Commercially however, the Portuguese potters attempted to develop renewed decorative solutions in order to reconcile the emerging taste for exoticism with the typically western shape of the object.

An identical pitcher albeit dated 1643, belongs to Oslo’s Kunstindustrimuseet collection (1643: BAUCHE, Ulrich, Lissabon – Hamburg Fayenceimport Für Den Norden, Hamburg, Museum Für Kunst und Gewwerbe, 1996, p.65, fig. 41.)

Magnífico pichel de faiança portuguesa, da primeira metade do século XVII, decorada a azul-cobalto sobre esmalte branco, invulgar pela representação do brasão da cidade de Danzig, que afere a sua encomenda à Liga Hanseática, através do mercado alemão de Hamburgo ou da sua representação em Lisboa.

Pichel de corpo ovóide, com o colo alto, pega curva e base redonda estrangulada. Na frente, o bojo apresenta uma coroa, da qual pendem fitas que alternam com a data de 1642. A coroa insere-se numa reserva delimitada por faixa circular de anéis e enrolamentos, sobre o fundo branco, encimada por um pináculo.

Completam a decoração do bojo um par de camélias exuberantes e ramos de pinheiro agitados, que se prolongam pelo colo, ao gosto chinês e estão separadas da base por banda de pétalas verticais, que sustenta igualmente o medalhão coroado.

Assenta numa base circular, envolvida por um anel com decoração circundante e radial e a asa está percorrida por pinceladas soltas, horizontais.

Para além das conhecidas encomendas de faiança portuguesa seiscentista feitas pelo mercado alemão através de Hamburgo, a presença das armas da cidade de Danzig (actual Gdansk, Polónia) neste pichel, permite supor que outras se estenderam à Liga Hanseática, que dominava o comércio marítimo do Norte da Europa e tinha representação em Portugal.

Encontra-se no Kunstgewerbemuseum de Oslo um pichel muito idêntico a este, nomeadamente na representação do brasão e na decoração envolvente, datado de 1643 (BAUCHE, Ulrich, Lissabon – Hamburg Fayenceimport Für Den Norden, Hamburgo, Museum Für Kunst und Gewwerbe, 1996, p. 65, fig. 41).
