Two Small Cups
Mother-of-pearl, gilt brass and silver mounts
India, Gujarat, late 16th to early 17th century
Diam.: 8.0 cm
Prov.: P.C., Lisbon
Two Iranian-type mother-of-pearl small wine cups made from Turbo marmoratus, a marine gastropod.
While one retains its original brass structure, the same material used to pin themother-of-pearl tesserae, the second cup features Manneriststyle gilded silver mountings decorated with ferroneries, comprising a raised circular foot, three hinged straps which articulate with the flat annular rim, and a cast, openwork handle delicately chased in the shape of a winged caryatid. The small size of these cups suggests that they were used to take opium dissolved in wine mixed with spices (a beverage known as kawa), a practice common to the Mughals and the courts of the Deccan Sultanates.
