Excepcional contador português do séc. XVII, em pau-santo com interiores em vinhático e ferragens de latão.
Este excelente exemplar de mobiliário português do último quartel de seiscentos, ilustra com perfeição o distanciamento, relativamente às suas congéneres, que as artes decorativas portuguesas atingem no período que se inicia com a restauração da Independência em 1640. De grande autonomia estilística, virtuosismo técnico e refletindo um entendimento perfeito da plasticidade dos materiais, este contador define-se pelas suas grandes dimensões e robustez, a escolha da madeira de pau-santo de tom rico e vergada uniforme, a simetria do seu desenho e a decoração e a pela abundância dos motivos de tremidos, introduzidos em Portugal na década de 1650, e imediatamente assimilados.

Exceptional rosewood cabinet of Brazilian mahogany lined interiors and decorative brass hardware.
This example of a much appreciated 17th century furniture type, clearly illustrates the individuality that Portuguese cabinet making achieved in the post Restoration of Independence age, comparatively to the other contemporary European productions. Of stylistic autonomy, technical virtuosity and reflecting a clear understanding of the material's attributes, it is defined by its unusually large dimensions and robustness, by the choice of the strong coloured and even grained rosewood timbers, by the symmetry of design and decoration, as well as by the abundance of rippled decorative motifs, introduced to Portugal in the 1650s and immediately assimilated.
