Elegant pair of rosewood, Portuguese drop-in seat stools, dating from the mid-18th century more specifically from the transitional D. João V / D. José period.
Conceived with formal but discreet aesthetic sobriety and perfect symmetry, this pair of sophisticated stools follows a characteristic design of the period.
Of squared, undulating and curved seat rail of accentuated corners, from which emerge the vigorously prominent knees and cabriole legs, these stools are assembled by traditional mortice and tenon joints, reinforced by pegs in the same timber. The plain and discreet decoration consists of unassuming carved trims that emerge symmetrically from either side of a small, stylised shell motif in the centre of each rail face. These trims follow the profile of the rails and of the stool legs terminating in a small scroll at mid length.
The elegant legs, of regular, consistent gauge, terminate in elegant pad-feet raised on rounded buttons, being joined by symmetrical “X” shaped stretchers with a triple turned button central motif. The drop-in undulating seat, upholstered in a later damask fabric, sits into a recessed lip cut into the seat rail.
Considering their perfectly symmetrical structure these stools are still related to the furniture of the D. João V reign (r. 1706-1750). However, by their lightness and formal elegance they are already announcing the new D. José style that will eventually culminate in the virtuosity of the Rocaille, so successfully interpreted by the Portuguese cabinet makers.

Elegante par de bancos Portugueses em pau-santo, de coxim “em grade” amovível, datando de meados do séc. XVIII, mais concretamente do período de transição D. João V / D. José.
Concebidos com formal mas discreta sobriedade estética e simetria perfeita, este par de bancos, de grande sofisticação, segue um modelo característico do seu período de fabrico.
De aro quadrangular, curvo e ondulado, com cantos acentuados de onde emergem joelhos vigorosamente proeminentes e pernas de galbo pronunciado, estes bancos adoptam o método de assemblagem por juntas de respiga simples, reforçadas por cavilhas na mesma madeira.
A decoração, muito singela, consiste nuns despretensiosos rebordos entalhados, que emergem simetricamente de cada lado de uma pequena concha estilizada, no centro de cada face do aro. Estes rebordos seguem o perfil dos aros e das pernas dos bancos terminando num pequeno enrolamento a meia-altura.
As pernas, de espessura regular e constante, terminam em pés de bolacha assentes sobre botão elevado, sendo unidas por travessas simétricas em “X”, decoradas ao centro por botão triplo torneado.
Os coxins amovíveis, de formato ondulado e estofados em tecido adamascado de fabrico mais tardio, assentam num rebordo cortado no interior do aro.
Pela sua estrutura perfeitamente simétrica, estes bancos estão ainda relacionados com o mobiliário do reinado de D. João V (r. 1706-1750). Contudo, pela sua leveza e elegância formal, também já anunciam o novo estilo D. José (r.1750-1777), que irá eventualmente culminar no virtuosismo do Rocaille, interpretado com tanto sucesso pelos marceneiros portugueses.
